Junk hauling is a lucrative business, and this Tulsa-based company is reaching out to other markets and greater opportunities for growth.

(PRWEB) December 18, 2007 – When David McDermott started his junk hauling business in Tulsa in 2003, he was determined to beat the only other player in the industry.

Now, his company, Go Junk, is expanding to Oklahoma City, and McDermott is approaching his goal by leaps and bounds.

“There are pop-up junk companies everywhere, but Go Junk is the only American rival to 1-800-GOT-JUNK?” McDermott said, referring to the Canada-based company.

Go Junk’s business model is working in Tulsa, where the market is now established and up for grabs. However, McDermott said that the business model will work anywhere.

“The market is still wide open and profitable,” he said. In addition to Oklahoma City, he is eyeing Bartlesville for franchise opportunities.

“Some people say, ‘I don’t want to get into the business because (1-800-GOT-JUNK?) is already there,’ but we’ve successfully won over the Tulsa market, and we are now expanding into OKC,” McDermott said.

There’s definitely a market in other areas, McDermott continued. “In Dallas, we hung postcards on telephone poles. Our first job from one of those postcards was $750. The calls I get are nationwide.”

Once Go Junk’s presence is solidified in Oklahoma City, McDermott said he is heading to the Fort Smith, Ark., area.

Although he’s ready to expand his junk hauling business, he’s not just looking for anyone.
“I want people in my business who know about GOT-JUNK,” he said. “I want people who are ready to chase them and do a better job.”

The benefits of owning a Go Junk franchise business are evident. A simple 20-minute job can bring anywhere from $250 to almost $500. “It’s just crazy,” McDermott said.

And junk hauling pays off in more ways than a simple paycheck, he added.

“I’ve been paid to haul off vans and box vans,” he said, “and I turned around, put ‘Go Junk’ on the side and turned them into marketing tools.”

Junk hauling entrepreneurs who open a Go Junk franchise will see a quick return on their $20,000 investment, McDermott said. This is versus the $90,000 franchise startup fee charged by 1-800-GOT-JUNK? (According to its Web site.)

Certified used trucks available to franchise owners, and personal consultants will teach Go Junk business owners how to saturate their territory and generate business.

Anyone interested in starting a franchise can visit Getting Started With GoJunk. In addition to the consulting services, complete marketing and advertising materials are available.

About Go Junk

Go Junk grew out of Go Leaves, a landscaping business started by David McDermott in 2000. He entered the junk hauling business in response to a challenge by Brian Scudamore, CEO of 1-800-GOT-JUNK?, to give him an American rival. Now, Go Junk has expanded throughout the Tulsa area. It offers people the opportunity to be self-employed while making money not only hauling junk away, but also by selling it off.

CEO of 1-800-GOTJUNK Brian Scudamore asked for an American rival. He may have gotten more than he bargained for.

Tulsa, Okla. (PRWEB) June 5, 2007 — They say, “Be careful what you wish for; you just might get it.”

Brian Scudamore, the CEO and founder of the Canadian junk-hauling company 1-800-GOTJUNK, asked on MSNBC for an American rival. He may have gotten more than he bargained for with David B. McDermott II, who took him up on that challenge and created Go-Junk.

McDermott, then owner of a landscaping business called GO-LEAVES, saw the potential in a junk-hauling franchise when he heard Scudamore’s challenge during the 5:30 a.m. broadcast. He immediately called AT&T to register the number for 1-877-4GOJUNK.

“When I called the 1-800-GOTJUNK line the first time, they didn’t want to let me through,” McDermott said. “Then I said, ‘If you’ve got junk, call Go-Junk.’ They put me right on through to Scudamore.”

Scudamore told McDermott that while he’d gotten more than 100 calls regarding his challenge, only one person had actually stepped up and started a company in response.

“He said he wanted an American rival,” McDermott said. “Well, he’s got one now.”

Go-Junk has been hauling junk in the Tulsa area since 2003, and McDermott is changing the junk franchise model with his business. Instead of a one-size-fits-all pricing system, Go-Junk works on a customer-by-customer basis.

“We didn’t want to lock in our max load,” McDermott said. “Most customers are ready to make a deal on a case-by-case basis.”

Go-Junk also uses box trucks for hauling, instead of dump trucks, because they’re better for hauling higher-grade junk for resale. Go-Junk franchise owners have sold so-called “junk” they’ve picked up to recycling centers, used utilities stores and even on eBay.

“You’re not only getting paid to haul the junk away,” McDermott said. “You’re also getting paid to sell it somewhere else.”

Plus, with billboards on every side, the trucks become a four-way advertisement. Instead of keeping the trucks in a warehouse, they keep them out in town on the busiest highways as a way of getting the word out about their business.

Go-Junk also provides its new franchise owners with a circular and a manual for getting their junk-hauling franchise off the ground.

“Within one week I can educate them on how to get their business started,” McDermott said. “We can help them get to know people in town, the recycling people and the stores where they can resell their items.”

This personal touch keeps new franchisees feeling like they’ve got a helping hand, and aren’t just jumping into abandon with a new business.

With a model like this, McDermott may surely find a way to give Scudamore and 1-800-GOTJUNK a run for their money.
